In Ephesians 4:11 it says “The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers.” There are similar lists in Romans 12 and I Corinthians 12. The specific elements of the respective lists vary, but two key points abide: everyone is expected to serve, and there are different ways of serving.
Everyone is expected to serve. The Apostle Paul made the same point in three of his letters because the idea was central to his vision of the church. There are no pew stuffers. Everyone needs a job. The body is only healthy when every part is functioning. Everyone is expected to serve.
There are different ways of serving. Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers do different things. There are a lot of different instruments in the orchestra. No matter one’s interests, abilities, or temperament, everyone can make a contribution.
In our sermon this Sunday we will continue our series, “Why Am I Here?” with a message, “I’m Here to Serve Others.”
