Here’s a reason to have children: so they can serve God and give him glory.
This Sunday, Mother’s Day, we are going to be looking in the Bible at the story of Hannah. Hannah was childless until she prayed to God for a child. She made a deal with God, that if she was given a son, she would devote him to the Lord. As a rule, you don’t make deals with God, but in this instance, God answered her prayer, and her son Samuel was born to her. Hannah lived up to her end of the bargain. As soon as the boy was old enough, she brought him to the temple at Shiloh, to serve God as long as he lived.
Samuel grew up to be a great man. He was the leader of the nation of Israel in his day. He selected and anointed the first two kings of Israel, Saul and David. Through Samuel’s guidance, Israel was transformed from a loose confederation of tribes, often oppressed by foreigners, into a powerful nation.
The story of Hannah and Samuel demonstrates that one of our hopes for our children is that they would grow up to serve God and make a difference in the world. That is the mother’s victory.
