Your relationship with God is the foundation for all your relationships with people. Your capacity to be on good terms with anyone, whether they be someone you love or a passing stranger, begins with your connection with your creator.
Your relationship with God will clarify your identity, your purpose, and your character. It will assure you of your salvation. Everything you need to interact well with other people begins with your spiritual life.
The first step to establishing your relationship with God is to get to know who God is. The nature of God has been revealed to us in Jesus Christ. God is the maker of all things. He is Lord of the universe. He is holy and pure. He is compassionate. He is forgiving. He is unconditional love. Start with getting to know who God is.
The next step is to pay attention to God. What is true of healthy relationships with people is true of our relationship with God. We have to pay attention. We are not speaking of becoming a religious fanatic. Simple practices observed on a consistent basis, like prayer and bible reading, will suffice. Pay attention to God.
To evaluate your relationship with God, ask yourself these three questions:
- How are you abiding in God?
- How are you being pruned?
- How are you bearing fruit?
