We all feel pressed for time. We have too many chores to do, too many events to attend, too much content to absorb. We would all like to have more time. Today I want to encourage you to think outside the box. Think beyond the weeks, months, and years of your life. Think about the time when you are no longer here. Think of the influence you will have after you are gone. Think about your legacy.
We accept the reality that we are all going to run out of time. We want to use the time we do have wisely. We don’t want to throw away days by being angry or bitter. Rather than resent the time we don’t have, we do better to be thankful for the time we do have. We also think about what happens when our time is up. We think about the legacy we leave.
It is helpful to recognize that we are part of something that is bigger than us. If we live apart from God, then our life is no more than what we personally accomplish in the time assigned to us. We die and we are gone, and our accomplishments with us. However, if we live with God, or as Christians say, if we are in Christ, then our lives have a purpose that continues beyond the date of our death. Jesus redeems the futility of our lives and gives us meaning that extends beyond the date of our death.
In our sermon this Sunday we will be talking about the legacy we leave.
